High Fructose Corn Syrup - free fat fo' you!

There's a great NPR story on what the corn refiner's association is trying to do about their whole High Fructose Corn Syrup dilemma....man, has that stuff gotten a tussle-up, knock down over the past couple of years.  So much so that they had to do a TV blast of commercials to try and salvage corn's 'good name.'  'Member these?

HFCS Campaign - "Just like sugar..."

The bad mojo is well-deserved, too, in my opinion.  HFCS is nasty stuff - "sugar is sugar is sugar" really, truly doesn't apply in the case of HFCS.  There's been too much hard evidence come to light over the past year that says otherwise.  UNLIKE table sugar, the fructose in HFCS is just floating around free to do as it pleases.  It's metabolized and stored differently than glucose (our body's preferred fuel), & evidence supports the theory that this free-falling fructose is fat-happy.  As in - it literally goes straight to your belly - and that puts you at risk for CVD, diabetes, and cancer.

Be savvy, my friendly foodies - be savvy to the marketing magic of the corn industry, who's getting ready to pull out some more from their highly-subsidized hats....
